Nintendo Game Preorders Are Being Canceled Ahead of 2027 Release

Nintendo has already unveiled its first major Switch 2 exclusive for 2027, Metroid Ravenous, but some of the game's preorders appear to have hit a major hitch. Samus Aran's next outing is a direct follow-up to 2021's Metroid Dread, which itself was the long-awaited return of the legendary series' classic 2D formula.
Preorders for the Metroid Ravenous Special Edition made through British retailer Very are being abruptly canceled with seemingly no explanation as to why. The Special Edition runs £99.99—Nintendo's own sold-out listing in USD is $119.99—and comes with a physical copy of Metroid Ravenous, a SteelBook case, and an Amiibo of Samus in her Metroid Suit.
Metroid Ravenous Special Edition Preorders Canceled by Retailer
Many who reserved a Special Edition of Metroid Ravenous through Very were recently met with an email that simply said, "Unfortunately, we're unable to supply the item(s) you ordered." Nintendo Life confirmed that this was not a one-off incident, and it would appear that it's a fairly widespread issue. In fact, the entire listing for Metroid Ravenous Special Edition seems to have been removed from Very's website.
Since the Special Edition is sold out on Nintendo's store as well, this may be a supply issue—either with the SteelBook case or, perhaps more likely, the included Amiibo. It's unfortunate (and frustrating for those involved) that sales were apparently made and not honored, but the payments for the canceled orders have been refunded at least.
With four months until Metroid Ravenous' release, there's still time for a restocking to occur, just like Nintendo promised with the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2, but stock shortages on Amiibo are fairly common, and there's no guarantee that preorders will reopen.
MercurySteam Returns for Metroid Ravenous
Despite a hiccup in Metroid Ravenous Special Edition preorders, there's a lot of excitement around the series' sixth mainline entry. A major factor is the return of developer MercurySteam, which began its Metroid tenure with the 2017 remake of Metroid 2, and subsequently made the critically acclaimed Metroid Dread.
Dread brought the series out of a long hiatus, and is considered to be among, if not the best 2D Metroid title, broadly being credited with the series' revitalization. MercrurySteam returning for Ravenous has prospects looking way up for the next chapter in Samus' adventure, especially considering it's also the first Metroid game to be exclusive to the Switch 2.
It was Dread that introduced the Metroid Suit that the new Amiibo is now based on, and it will clearly return in Ravenous, as shown in the game's reveal trailer. Nintendo's Amiibo products have proven incredibly popular, and those related to Ravenous have already sold out—apparently including those set aside to be included in the Special Edition.
