Anti-piracy software Denuvo took legal action targeting an anonymous game cracker known as 'voices38' for bypassing Denuvo's protection on 26 games.

As reported by TorrentFreak, voices38 has been releasing "old-school", traditional cracks that circumvent Denuvo's protection. These cracks gained popularity because they don't require disabling Windows security features. voices38 ramped up his release activity this summer, with voices38 releasing five Denuvo cracks in a single day earlier this month. Following these alleged violations, on Monday, the company filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The affected games include FIFA 20, PES 2020, Hogwarts Legacy, Black Myth: Wukong, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Resident Evil Requiem.

Recently, voices38 cracked more games outside the 26-item list from the filing – Persona 3 Reload and Star Wars Outlaws.

Since Denuvo does not hold the copyrights to the affected games, it cannot pursue voices38 for copyright infringement. Instead, the company is suing under the DMCA, which makes it illegal to bypass digital locks protecting copyrighted content or provide others with tools to do so.

The game cracker's identity remains undisclosed. The filing refers to them as "an unknown individual or entity." Denuvo’s filing points to information from social media and Steam, including a Discord user ID, a Reddit account, and seven Steam profiles, allegedly belonging to voices38. The company could subpoena Reddit, Discord, and Valve to obtain information that could reveal the cracker’s identity.

Following the news, voices38 took to Reddit and said: "All is fine. Everything will continue as normal."

Denuvo faced criticism over its impact on PC performance. For example, the inZOI developer removed the software's protection after backlash. Dropping DRM from games some time after its release is a common practice among developers – for instance, this was the practice of Doom Eternal, Resident Evil Village, and The Callisto Protocol.
