Call of Duty movie director Peter Berg has revealed during an interview with Variety that the big screen adaptation of Activision’s multi-million selling franchise will focus on the “cost of war,” and therefore won’t feel like a superhero film.
Berg highlighted the various characters in the Modern Warfare series focuses on “complicated humans” and not “cartoon characters,” and therefore the Call of Duty film will reflect this.
If you really look at the missions and the storylines and thecharacters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex, these arecomplicated humans. These are not, and no disrespect, cartoon characters or comic books. These are very nuanced storylines; there’s a real soul to the ‘Modern Warfare’ universe. Yes, there’s violence and hardware andequipment and killing. But underneath it, I think the game, and thecreators of the game, are really looking at the cost of war, the cost ofhaving to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to puthimself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry.
The Call of Duty movie is targeting a June 2028 release in cinemas, and was previously confirmed to be based in the Modern Warfare era of games, which have proven extremely popular with players. In September 2025, Hollywood royalty Steven Spiellberg revealed he’s actually a big fan of the Call of Duty series and wanted to helm the movie himself, but “spooked” Activision by wanting full control of the project.
