Diablo has won. Sanctuary is lost. The apocalypse is here and the world is just one last stepping stone in the Eternal Conflict. These are the desperate situations woven by Diablo V’s devs during the game’s panel at this year’s BlizzCon, including peeks at how this setting changes the game and some other early tidbits.

Considering the game’s world is now lorded over by Diablo himself, players will no longer find any safe haven in towns but in caravans full of allies who will offer some expected services such as vendors, along with some new companions such as a stranded treasure goblin and a former Sister of the Sightless Eye. Meanwhile the landscape of Sanctuary itself is noted as being unstable, reflected in procedural generation that appears to change the terrain, monsters, and rewards.

The panel also revealed the existence of three of the ARPG’s classes so far in the form of the returning Demon Hunter and Monk and the all-new Plague Knight. Finally, the panel talked up D5’s itemization, with experimentation on stat requirements, the return of gear-based sets, a deep crafting system that follows Lord of Hatred’s approach, and D2-styled runes and runewords. The full 40-minute panel can be watched on YouTube if you’re curious.
